“”They made a human-like being with whom one can have a personal relationship. When you look at the vast size of the universe and how insignificant an accidental human life is in it, that seems most impossible.” – Stephen Hawking
Decorated scientist Stephen Hawking, the 21st century version of Einstein, declared recently in a news interview with Dianne Sawyer of ABC news that in the “war between religion and science” that ultimately science would win. Hawking went on to express why he thought that would be so. When stating that the “vast size of the universe and how insignificant . . . human life is in it,” Dr. Hawking is seeing the right result, but coming to the wrong conclusion. The vastness of the universe does not underscore the insignificance of man, but rather the full scope of the power and grace, and mercy, and significance of God.
One of the mistakes that most people are making is the belief that there is a war between science and religion. I want to go on record as saying that there is a war between Christianity and religion. Christianity is not a religion, nor is it a preference of personal faith. It is accepting the facts of the past, present, and the future, as given to us by the Word of God, and acting on those facts. The issues are never really about religion, or science, the true conflict is about truth.
The real conflict rests between what the Bible declares, and the conclusions that men come to based upon their own reasoning, and what they see and observe. When men give themselves to observation of the earth and the earth’s processes, and the night sky and it’s processes, and come to a different conclusion than what the scriptures have revealed, they have come to the wrong conclusion.
The Bible is not a science book, or an academic book, but the academics of all truth is in it. There is no true science that contradicts the scriptures anywhere. In fact one of the most amazing facts about the Bible is what is not in it. The Bible being written by 40 plus authors over 1600 years, beginning with Moses, and ending with John, is a book that is void of the absurd sciences of those times.
Were the Bible a product of human intelligence and reasoning then what science it does contain would be absurd, and forensically flawed. However when you come to the scriptures, and look through their pages, wherever you find references that have “scientific issues” in them, those issues are the accepted norms of today’s sciences.
The fact is that every person has the same “creative evidence”, and our view of the evidence is a picture of the condition of our heart. Not only do our conclusions about Creation reveal the reference point from which we are beginning, but they also reveal the direction in which we are travelling.
My heart hurts for Dr. Hawking. Not merely for his ALS disease, but for his S I N disease. It is my prayer that somehow, someone in the near future will be able to share with Dr. Hawking the good news that God is a Personal God, who sent His Son to die a substitutionary death for our sins, so that justice will be fulfilled, man could be saved, and God could be glorified.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: ” Romans 1:18-20
It’s not just the “down and out” in life that need Christ, but it is also the “up and gone.” Intelligent lost men really aren’t that intelligent. At least not in matters of ultimate and absolute truth. A lost heart has a blind mind, and only when Jesus is at home in their heart, will there ever be real sight in their mind. That is my prayer for Dr. Stephen Hawking; that would truly be a change worth making.
