In Romans chapter 1, the Apostle Paul delineates a society’s descent into darkness. Perhaps one of the most eye opening chapters in the Bible when it comes to explaining the corruption of a culture, it is also one of the most despised chapters in a world gone wrong. With pinpoint precision, and unavoidable revelation, the Bible explains man’s journey from the doorstep of life saving faith, to the dungeon of reprobate minds.
We have often said that God is not just man’s only hope, but He is also man’s greatest enemy. And we see in Romans chapter one what God will ultimately do to a people who descend the steps of denial, and embrace their own godhead promised by Lucifer in the garden. Ultimately, He will turn them over to a reprobate mind.
The word used in Romans 1:28 is a word that essentially means, “worthless” or “no value.” It is a mind that is categorically useless. Some have described the concept of this word to mean “non-functioning.” In essence, the ultimate result is that when God turns men over to a reprobate mind, their mind is beyond the ability to function as God intended for it to. Reason, becomes unreasonable, up becomes down, right becomes wrong, it becomes a nebulous of insane and useless ideas, because there is no sense of standard to appeal to. In short the reprobate mind is a mind that has no floor in it for truth to stand on.
Interestingly enough, just before Paul brings God’s actions to this conclusion of reprobation, the last condition described is what John MacArthur described not as a sexual revolution, but a homosexual revolution. Once a society begins it’s descent with the denial of God, they are off on the race to reprobation. Once man turns out his own light, he then wades through the swamp of worshipping creation, then runs through the mire of sexual perversion, then “wallers” in the mud of homosexuality. Then God turns off their minds.
That has never been seen so clearly in our nation as it is in the California congress. This article from the Huffington Post is more than enough to grieve your spirit, and have a Romans chapter 1 object lesson before our very eyes. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/31/conversion-therapy-california_n_1560251.html
The California congress is in the process of passing a law banning Homosexual conversion therapy. They are taking it upon themselves to be the first to formally say as a government, it is wrong to convert a homosexual. While the law is aimed at “psychology” and not theology, their ultimate premise is that Homosexuality is a norm that all of society should now accept and embrace. Here are some of the quotes.
“It is extremely harmful to convince a child or teen that there is something fundamentally wrong with him when it is recognized and acknowledged that in fact, there is not,” she said. “The damage done in this equation is unimaginable.”
At the hearing, Lieu also argued that the therapy was invalid because it treated homosexuality as a disorder.
“Being lesbian or gay or bisexual is not a disease or mental disorder for the same reason that being a heterosexual is not a disease or a mental disorder,” Lieu said. “The medical community is unanimous in stating that homosexuality is not a medical condition.”
In one sense their logic is correct. It is not a medical condition, it is a sin. The point of this article is not to explain the sinfulness of homosexuality, but the insanity of these reprobate minds.
The minds who think like this are minds that no longer function the way that God intended for them to function. They have been rendered of no value. Many times we have asked the question when some liberal idealogue promotes some absurd idea, “what are they thinking?” The answer is they are not. At least not with the mind that God intended for man to have.
When we look at what is happening in California, we are seeing the end result of Romans 1 lived out before our very eyes. It is truly a tragedy.
I am always reminded by, and encouraged by the words of Adrian Rogers, “Sin Can’t Win and Faith can’t Fail.” My heart hurts when I read those headlines and hear of such tragedy. The glory is that we aren’t in the dark. We have been told why it’s happening, and have a sure understanding of the dynamics involved. When these things come across our culture, the devil ought to have a greater enemy in us now than he ever has before.
Thanks to Jesus, sin will never, no never, prevail; it will always lose in the end. May our hearts and minds pray more now than ever for the Lord to raise up His people, and put down Satan’s rebellion; then and only then will we begin to see changes worth making.
